Published transmission spectra for the active Ni in the Ni i-pr complex, on an absolute scale, displaying the expected XAS spectral trend for absorption coefficients (Chantler et al., 2015BB11). These measurements were taken simultaneously on the same samples as Fig. 1[link]. This illustrates the large differences in structure and spectral profiles of transmission data (μ/ρ)(ρt)s from the fluorescence measurement, [(\mu/\rho)_{\rm pe}^*] shown in Fig. 1[link], observed in many data sets. The standard error across the spectrum is of the order of 10−4 in absolute units or <0.01% on the raw data.
