Figure 5
(a) XR-HERFD map beyond Kβ2,5 after background subtraction using eight analyser crystals. A dual-peak substructure clearly emerges beyond an incident energy Einc = 7280 eV and is distinct from the noise fluctuations seen at higher emission energies (Eem). (b) XR-HERFD contour plot of the significance of the satellite region, displaying the number of standard errors (σse) following subtraction of the background. The number of standard errors per pixel around the peak Eem of the satellite, ∼6550 eV, increases from effectively 0 prior to the onset to over 30 at the maximum Einc for just a single pixel. This is well beyond the usual threshold for discovery (3–6 σse for the total integrated signal) and corresponds to a total signature of 652 σse in the satellite region. This is a new satellite.
