A class of determinantal equations for the scale factor, the temperature factors and quantitative chemical contents of the unit cell is derived assuming non-penetrating atoms but without making use of statistical arguments. A new method for the determination of the scale and Debye-Waller factors is developed on the basis of these equations and applied to the structure factors of Al(OH)3, giving results with errors of about 2%.
