Magnesium bis[hydrogentrioxoselenate(IV)] crystallizes in a new structure type with Mg2+ and hydrogen-bonded dimers of trigonal pyramidal SeO2OH− ions in an NaCl-like arrangement forming MgO6 octahedra linked via O—Se—O bonds to a three-dimensional network structure. The Mg—O and Se—O distances reflect the bonding schemes of the corresponding atoms. The hydrogen bonds in the (SeO2OH−)2 dimers are strong, with d(OHO) = 2.616 (2) Å. They are joined through Se and Mg atoms to form layered hydrogen-bond systems parallel to (100).
