The title compound, ADS {N-2-(2,4-dinitrophenylthio)phenyl]acetamide, C₁₄H₁₁N₃O₅S}, has been isolated as yellow crystals during the three-step synthesis of 3-nitrophenothiazine. To confirm the mechanism of this type of reaction, we report here the structure of ADS before the Smiles rearrangement. X-ray analysis shows the expected ortho and para dinitro compound.
