Graph showing the absorption spectra of loop-mounted X-irradiated solutions of cysteine (10 mM) and cystine (10 mM) in 30% glycerol with 1.5 M NaOH for 1 s of beam irradiation (dose approximately 4 × 104 Gy). Both solutions show absorption maxima at around 550 nm from the trapped electrons, but only the cystine solution has an absorption peak at 400 nm corresponding to the disulfide radical anion.
