Number of counts as a function of the threshold measured from a sample containing iron (Ef = 5.9 keV) when using X-rays of energy E0 = 12 keV. In this case, setting the threshold at E0/2, which is very close to Ef, would give Δ ≃ 10% counts from the fluorescence background. Therefore the threshold should be set at an intermediate level Et between the two energy components with a distance of at least Σ > 3 ENC from both Ef and E0.
