Pictorial representation of the X-ray induced conversion of metallic ions into zero-valent nanoparticles via water radiolysis. Sinusoidal waves describe the linear energy transfer strength of X-rays in water. X-rays decompose the water into [{\rm{H}}^{\bullet}] and [{\rm{OH}}^{\bullet}] radicals and H2 and H2O2 molecules making an eight-loop reaction. [{\rm{H}}^{\bullet}] is a strong reducing agent that converts Ag+ to Ag0 within its vicinity.
