A primary electron eprim may be ejected (left) or alternatively an avalanche of secondary electrons esec can be created by electron scattering (right). The relative importance of these two processes depends on the material depth z. With decreasing absorption constant μ1 > μ2 > μ3 the penetration depth 1/μ of the photon increases and the ratio of escaping secondary to primary electrons increases too.
