Changes in Fe speciation in roots of rice, either (a) hydrated or (b) freeze-dried roots, following growth in 25 µM FeIII EDTA for 7 days (Experiment 5). Samples were scanned at constant energy corresponding to the white line peaks of FeII and FeIII sulfates (7126.1 or 7131.0 eV) for 300 s. At 7126.1 eV, a progressive increase in fluorescence intensity would correspond to the conversion of FeIII to FeII (and vice versa), while at 7131.0 eV, a progressive increase in fluorescence intensity would correspond to the conversion of FeII to FeIII (and vice versa).
