1. Introduction

Journal of Synchrotron Radiation is an open-access journal, i.e. free of charge to all readers. The costs of peer review, of journal production, and of online hosting and archiving are met by charging an open-access fee to authors. This document provides a summary of the open-access policy for this journal. The open-access policies of other IUCr journals are described elsewhere.

2. Open access and authors

Authors will be asked to pay an open-access fee upon acceptance of their article for publication in Journal of Synchrotron Radiation. However, please note that authors will be asked to confirm that they can pay the open-access fee, or that they have a full or partial payment waiver, at the submission stage.

3. Open-access fee

The open-access fees for Journal of Synchrotron Radiation are as follows.

IUCr MEMBER PRICES
IUCr Associate price USD 2290
World Directory (or IUCr ID) price USD 2410
ACA, AfCA, AsCA, ECA or LACA member price USD 2410

NON-MEMBER PRICES
Authors whose institutions or funders have a Wiley deal (see below) No direct charge
Non-member price USD 3180

The fees are used to meet the costs of peer review, of journal production, and of online hosting and archiving. There are no submission charges.

Waivers

Authors from developing countries or authors who have financial difficulties in paying for open access may apply for their open-access fees to be waived. A full or partial waiver may be available; waiver requests must be made during submission of an article to the journal.

4. Payment

During submission, authors will be asked to designate a correspondence author who will be responsible for arranging payment; this author will be sent a quotation by Wiley detailing the open-access fees.

If your article is accepted for publication, the correspondence author will be asked to complete article payment using Wiley payment systems.

Payment covered by a Wiley deal

Your payment may be covered by a deal between your institution or funding agency and our publication partner, Wiley. A full list of institutions and funding agencies with such deals is available on the Wiley site. Wiley also provide an author compliance tool for checking journal policies and funding availability.

IUCr members

If you are not covered by a Wiley deal, but you are an IUCr Associate, are in the World Directory or have an IUCr ID, you may claim the appropriate member price during submission.

In addition, if you are a member of the American Crystallographic Association (ACA), African Crystallographic Association (AfCA), Asian Crystallographic Association (AsCA), European Crystallographic Association (ECA) or Latin-American Crystallographic Association (LACA), you may claim the member price during submission.

Facility arrangements

The IUCr has arrangements with several large facilities for a number of articles from the facility to be made open access each year. Following submission, all articles will be checked as to whether they qualify or whether a discount may be applied. The facilities that have agreements with the IUCr are listed in the submission pages. If your facility is not listed, but you are interested in setting up a facility arrangement, please contact jsr@iucr.org.

5. Open access and copyright

Journal of Synchrotron Radiation adheres to the Budapest Open Access Initiative definition of open access. Users have the right to read, download, copy, distribute, print, search, or link to the full texts of open-access articles.

Authors of open-access articles will not be asked to transfer copyright to the IUCr.

Open-access articles are published under an open-access Creative Commons Attribution (CC-BY) Licence.

The IUCr is a signatory to the San Francisco Declaration on Research Assessment (DORA).

6. Open access and funding bodies

Some funding bodies, e.g. NIH, require authors to deposit their articles in a recognised archive such as PubMed Central. A summary of the IUCr arrangements for NIH-funded authors can be found at https://journals.iucr.org/services/nihpolicy.html.

IUCr publications aim to meet best practice in open-access publication and conform with the publisher requirements of funders such as the Wellcome Trust, see https://wellcome.ac.uk/funding/managing-grant/publisher-requirements.

7. Taxes

For authors in the European Union, VAT will be charged at the local rate unless a VAT registration number is provided.

8. Reimbursement

We are generally unable to process cancellations, refunds or returns of open-access fees after publication. Authors seeking reimbursement should contact IUCr Customer Services (support@iucr.org).
