Schematic geometry of the IPM in the FXE instrument. Four APDs (orange, labeled I0, I1, I2 and I3) collect backscattered (and fluorescence) photons from a 15 µm-thick screen (C) made of nanocrystalline diamond with grain size specified <50 nm. The diodes are mounted on a linear translation stage, which permits the movement of the entire diode assembly closer to or further away from the backscattering foil, depending on the actual incident flux and photon energy.
