Comparison of the performance of the MuCLS with active source stabilization (a) and without stabilization (b) over the course of 3 h. Source sizes (blue and orange) are relatively stable in both cases. In contrast to this behavior, the source positions (green and red) drift significantly if no active stabilization is performed, while they remain perfectly stable if the closed-loop feedback system is running. Actively pinning the source position improves X-ray flux stability in addition, as the optimum overlap between laser and electron beam is maintained. The source positions are shifted with an artificial offset of +35 µm for clarity. Quantitative values are shown in Table 1[link].
