The background measured for an empty cell is overlapped and the background-subtracted signal is given below. It should be noted that the intensities of the datasets are normalized to an absolute scale. Thus, the artefacts in the PFA background-subtracted data originated from the technical challenges of manufacturing PFA cells with homogenously thin walls, where the scattering from PFA cells varies as a function of the cell orientation making the background data collection more challenging.
