Initially, pristine alabaster (A) begins to dehydrate from gypsum to bassanite [speckled area in (B)] which weakens the sample, promoting shear failure [(B) and (C)]. Further dehydration [(D) and (E)] both creates additional porosity and, apparently, leads to `healing' of the plane of shear failure (E). |
