Atomic volume of the transition (3d), rare-earth (4f), and actinide (5f) elements as a function of electron count. Note the unusual shape of the curve for the actinide series. In the case of Eu and Yb the large expansion is due to these elements being stable in the divalent state. All other rare-earth elements have the trivalent ground state.
