U N4-edge RIXS spectra of UO2 at T = 15 K. Data were taken with a photon energy of 778 eV for σ linear polarization, as shown in the inset. The red lines show the RIXS spectrum calculated for the U4+ 5f2 configuration and CF parameters consistent with inelastic neutron scattering. The blue lines show the underlying multiplet peaks (with no line broadening) of the CF excitations around 180 meV and 3F2 multiplet around 550 meV. Adapted from Lander et al. (2021BB140).
