publicising your article
As scientific union with many commissions and links to regional and national crystallographic associations, the International Union of Crystallography (IUCr) is in a unique position to be able to publicise and promote articles published in its journals to the crystallographic community. In addition, there are many other ways in which the IUCr raises awareness of articles published in its journals, including, for example, targeted email alerts, press releases, and wide dissemination of its journals to aggregators and indexing organizations.
Open access
Open-access publishing, where no charge is made to the reader, offers many advantages to authors including higher visibility of publications and higher citation rates. Authors publishing in IUCr journals have the option to make their article open access, for an open-access fee.
The IUCr makes all open-access articles published in its journals immediately available in PubMed Central, a public archive created by the National Center for Biotechnology Information of the National Library of Medicine, USA.
For authors of NIH-funded work, the IUCr deposits the final published versions of such articles in PubMed Central in compliance with NIH Public Access Policy. These articles will be available in PubMed Central either immediately if they are open access or 1 year following publication if they are not open access.

Abstracting and indexing services
The IUCr regularly uploads journal article metadata to the Science Citation Index, Scopus, Chemical Abstracts, Medline, EBSCO, Swets, CrossRef, Wiley-Blackwell, DOAJ and many other organisations.
Partnership with Wiley-Blackwell
The IUCr works in partnership with Wiley-Blackwell. IUCr journals are included in Wiley Online Library and marketed alongside other Wiley-Blackwell journal titles.
Role of authors
Authors are encouraged to promote their published articles as this will further help to raise awareness and increase the impact of their work. We are committed to supporting you in these efforts.
Authors can use their personal networks
by writing a press release and distributing this on social media/blogging sites,
highlighting their article on individual/research group websites and newsletters,
mentioning their article at conferences/seminars, and
making use of their research institution press office.
Authors can increase the impact of their work by broadening its appeal
by enriching articles with supporting information such as multimedia files and data, and
providing contextual information to aid understanding of their work across different scientific disciplines.
Kudos
From 2014, the IUCr will start work in partnership with Kudos on article publicity. Kudos is an organisation set up to help authors and institutions maximize the impact and visibility of their publications.
Kudos provides a platform:
for assembling or creating information (such as lay summaries or related multimedia) that helps readers filter the growing quantity of published research;
for sharing such information (for example, via social media or email) to increase discoverability; and
for measuring and monitoring the effect of both creating and sharing additional metadata and multimedia.
To find out more about Kudos and our plans please contact Dr Jonathan Agbenyega, Business Development Manager, IUCr, ([email protected]).
Press releases
From 2014, IUCr Journals will publish press releases and commentaries online (after embargoes have been lifted) for a selection of key articles in order to explain developments in crystallography and to leverage key research findings across related disciplines
