Schematic illustration of the construction of the crystal structures of hydro­phobic amino acids (as enantiomers, racemates or L:D complexes). The structures are divided into hydro­phobic and hydro­philic layers; the latter are in turn composed of two hydrogen-bonded sheets. At the centre of the hydro­phobic layer there is an inter­face between side chains emanating from adjacent hydro­philic layers.
