A sketch of the scattering geometry used in GISAXS and GIWAXS (GISANS and GIWANS will be analogous). The sample surface is inclined by an incident angle αi with respect to the horizon. The exit angle is denoted αf and the in-plane angle ψ. The color coding visualizes differences in the scattered intensity on a logarithmic scale. Typical sample-to-detector distances for GIWAXS and GISAXS are given.
