Instantly after the excitation by the X-ray pulse all ⁵⁷Fe nuclei re-emit in phase in the forward direction (a). A jump of an individual atom during a time interval after the pulse that is comparable with the ⁵⁷Fe lifetime of 141 ns leads to a dephasing (b).
