Figure 5 Total integral of scattering intensity at each of the points on the vertical scan. The largest value at point 8 corresponds to the centre of the mammillary layer. An increase in the total integral is seen as the scan progresses towards the outer surface of the shell. The sample thickness was 300  µm throughout.
