S/N ratio as a function of spectrometer efficiency according to equations (1)[link] and (2)[link] for different degrees of line overlap, assuming a dilute sample concentration Sx = 0.01Sy, an incident flux I0 = 1012 photons s−1, a fluorescence yield = 10−3 and an acquisition time τ = 15 s. This acquisition time per excitation energy corresponds to a ∼1 h acquisition time for a ∼200 step X-ray absorption spectrum.
