preparation of abstracts for conferences or congresses

The IUCr regularly publishes Abstracts from conferences or congresses, such as the triennial IUCr Congress or the European Crystallographic Society meetings.

This page sets out some basic guidelines to assist in the preparation of such abstracts. It should be read in conjunction with the guidelines published by the organisers of the meeting concerned.

Title, authors, affiliations and keywords should be entered according to the organisers' instructions, followed by the text of the abstract.

References and figures (if any) should be restricted to those necessary for the comprehension of the abstract. For reasons of space, references should be indicated by numbers in square brackets, [1], [2] etc., in the text, and be listed at the end of the abstract, one per line (not run on).

An example of a reference in the IUCr Abstracts style is as follows:

[1] Author, X. Y. & Author, A. B. (Year). Journal title, volume, page range.

This basically follows the IUCr Journals style for references, with the exception of the use of a number to cite the reference in the text.

Note also that in the IUCr Abstracts style, again for reasons of space, all author names are given for single-author or two-author references, but for 3 or more authors only the first is given plus 'et al.'

For instance,

This should result in a compact and efficient way of presenting the information, without unduly lengthening any abstract.

Further examples in the IUCr Abstracts style are given below, covering most types of literature source.
