Cover illustration: An atomistic cross section of a 5 nm palladium nanocrystal reveals a spatially heterogeneous lattice strain field, with pronounced distortions at the under-coordinated surface extending into the particle interior. By connecting these surface-induced distortions with size-dependent lattice parameters, Debye–Waller coefficients and microstrain, the study in this issue by Subbareddy et al. [Acta Cryst. (2026), A82, 366–376] establishes practical scaling relations for interpreting diffraction data and understanding structure–property relationships in nanoscale materials.
