The review describes results of the last three or four years from the application of both X-ray and neutron small-angle scattering (SAS) to problems in the general field of materials science. A wide range of topics has been covered including phase separation in binary and ternary systems (early stages as well as the determination of the metastable miscibility gap), density and concentration fluctuations in single-phase systems, and studies of various structural defects such as voids, radiation damage, dislocations, and surfaces and interfaces. The interaction between magnetic moments and neutrons has made possible SAS research on the long-range interaction of spins in complicated magnetic systems and flux-line studies in type-II superconductors, and this work is also reviewed.
