Images of the sample stream taken in air with the sample between crossed polarisers. Bright regions of the images indicate the presence of the polarizing lamellar phase. The sample composition is 60:40 MO/water (w/v) and the nozzle diameter is 75 µm. (a) Stabilizing gas sheath turned off and sample is in a non-polarizing cubic phase. (b) Gas sheath on with backing pressure of approximately 20 psi. Brightness of the sample indicates the presence of lamellar phase. (c, d) The appearance of isolated lamellar regions not associated with changes in gas pressure. These are likely caused by air bubbles within the sample and are consistent with the transient appearance of Lα observed in the X-ray data.
