XANES spectra of the references investigated in this study. NH4VO3, tetrahedrally coordinated V5+, shown in blue, exhibits a pronounced pre-edge peak. This is also visible for V2O5, fivefold-coordinated V5+, shown in orange. V2O5 shows in comparison with NH4VO3 a slight shift of the pre-edge peak position to higher energies, which is given by the higher coordination number. Both references for sixfold coordination, V2O3, V3+ and VO2, V4+, are characterized by a high white-line intensity, and shift in edge position to lower energies. VOSO4, shown in green, exhibits a small pre-edge peak due to its distorted octahedral coordination.
