Illustrations of the operation of (a) a convex (divergent) lens that directly expands the beam and (b) a concave (convergent) lens that focuses the beam, which then expands in further propagation. The smaller transverse extent needed for small beams (inner lens outline in blue, compared to the outer-green) reduces the on-axis thickness and attenuation of the convex optic.
