Conceptual illustration of the virtual-reference X-ray speckle tracking method. An X-ray pulse train with fluctuating phases illuminates a static speckle mask. A near-field detector records the corresponding set of transversally displaced speckle patterns. The magnitude of the displacement is proportional to the phase shift between pulses. We define a virtual reference at their midpoint, enabling a statistical reconstruction of wavefield fluctuations throughout the pulse train.
