The overview scan at the top, with a section enlarged below, shows a region encompassing nigrosome 1, highlighting elevated iron levels in tyrosine hydroxyl­ase-positive dopaminergic neurons (Friedrich et al., 2021View full citation; Brammerloh et al., 2021View full citation; Brammerloh et al., 2024View full citation). Hotspots of increased iron concentration correspond to the locations of iron-rich neuromelanin-pigmented neurons. The high sensitivity of the detector enables imaging of macroscopic areas at microscopic resolution within reasonable scan times, allowing for the mapping of iron concentrations both in individual cells and across large neuronal ensembles.
