Cover illustration: Three uranyl–acetate–bipyridine crystal structures were determined from bulk crystalline material obtained from the slow evaporation of incubations of uranyl acetate with hydraulic fracking fluid (HFF) and bipyridine ligands. Their crystal structures highlight the possibility of using bipyridine within HFF to bind U in solution, which could draw the U–bipyridine complex out of solution, sequester U, and retain it within shale during hydraulic fracking. A new quaternary phase Ba2Y0.87(1)Mn1.71(1)Te5 has been synthesized, which is the first member of the Ba–M–Mn–Te system (M = Sc and Y). The structure consists of six crystallographically independent sites: one Ba site, one Y site, one Mn site and three Te sites. The building blocks of the structure are YTe6 octahedra and MnTe4 tetrahedra.
