As revenue from subscriptions to our journals falls, the IUCr is considering introducing a small fee (about USD 50) to cover some of the costs of submission and peer review. We would be grateful if you could indicate whether you would be willing to pay such a fee in future. Other points to note about the possible fee are as follows:

• Discretionary waivers would be available for authors who demonstrate financial need
• For authors publishing an open-access article, the open-access fee already covers the cost of submission and peer review, so no additional fee would be requested
