Cover illustration: In this issue, Kaplan et al. [Acta Cryst. (2024), A80, 460–463] show the Fourier (diffraction) pattern from the vertices of the chiral aperiodic Spectre monotile. Log intensity is displayed to enhance fine details: yellow/orange is high intensity, and blue/black is low intensity. v is the tile edge length. The pattern has rotational symmetry 6 about the origin, with no mirror lines. Unlike the aperiodic Hat monotile, the pattern has no periodicity. As the model size increases, repeating honeycomb motifs appear at many reciprocal length scales, and the pattern evolves into a system of densely packed sharp peaks.

An alternative method to the Takagi–Taupin equations is developed. It uses an accurate dispersion relation and is capable of calculating both dynamical and kinematic diffraction.

The two essential observables in powder diffraction are peak intensity and position. While the structure factor is a smooth function of the structure and changes little with desymmetrization, peak positions are more akin to delta functions and are extremely sensitive even to a small desymmetrization. It is shown that lattice relaxation causes line broadening, asymmetry and displacement which are important in the context of correct interpretation of observed powder diffraction patterns.

The diffraction pattern of the aperiodic chiral Spectre monotiling is described. Unlike that for the aperiodic Hat tiling, the diffraction pattern of the Spectre tiling is non-periodic.
