Cover illustration: Cryptands and tertiary amides are of interest as hosts for cationic guests. This macrobicyclic compound is composed of a 12-membered and two 18-membered rings. The solid-state structure shows that each of the amide groups is not coplanar with the adjacent benzene ring and NMR studies indicate that this conformational relationship persists in solution.
