Cover illustration: 4,4'-[2,5-Bis(dodecyloxy)-p-phenylene]bis(2-methylbut-3-yn-2-ol), C40H66O4, is an intermediate in the preparation of -conjugated polymers such as polyaryleneethynylenes (PAEs) which exhibit photoluminescence or electroluminescence and can be used as electronic and photonic devices. In this molecule, the propinyl and dodecoxyl substituents lie close to the plane of the benzene ring. The OH groups of the butynol units lie out of this plane in the same direction, facilitating the dimerization of neighbouring molecules through O-HO hydrogen bonds. See Zhang & Gu [Acta Cryst. (2010). E66, o1521].
